A cozy natural corner that can hypnotize.
The five accommodations that make up the houses of ea Astei are in one of the most beautiful places in Bizkaia, in the vicinity of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, on the side of a mountain overlooking the Cantabrian Sea.
Its own name – Ea, named after the municipality where it is located and Astei in Basque, oak grove or place of oaks – is an indicator of a cosy natural corner capable of hypnotising anyone.
The original house, Astei, is a typical Basque farmhouse dating from the end of the 15th century.
That is why the visitor will have the opportunity to get to know some of the old traditions and ways of life of the Basque Country through the utensils and equipment that have been gathered and lovingly restored by Mertxe Begiristain, the owner of the house.

What to do?
The surroundings of the Rural Houses of Ea Astei provide an endless number of activities among which the following stand out:
The most populous city in the area where you can visit the General Meetings (regional government) of Bizkaia.
A place of symbolic value for the Basques where the legendary Tree of Gernika is located and the Museum of Peace, a thematic museum that disseminates the “culture of peace”.
Laga and Laida beaches with spectacular views, ideal for surfing or enjoying a meal in front of the sea.
These deposits were located at the time of the Roman Empire, at least 2000 years ago, and it is in that period that their extraction began.
Proof of this are two funeral pits from the 1st and 2nd centuries located at the Forua site and which were carved out of this material.
At the top of a steep path is the chapel of San Miguel de Ereñozar. This hermitage was the parish church from the 10th century until 1660, when the current one was built in Elexalde. Inside there is a stone sarcophagus of great antiquity.
According to the chronicles of Alfonso XI, an ancient fortress was located here where some Biscayans who opposed the monarch’s entry into the territory in 1334 took refuge.
